IHC reserves verdict on petitions seeking contempt of court against Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has on Wednesday reserved the verdict on the petitions seeking contempt of court proceedings against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
The IHC judge Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani resumed hearing of the petitions filed by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and Makhdoom Niaz Inqilabi seeking contempt of court proceedings against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
Presenting his arguments, Makhdoom Niaz Inqilabi said that in his speech in Lahore on August 25, Nawaz Sharif had leveled allegations of an alliance between the judiciary and other powers, adding that the former PM disgraced the apex court and judiciary.
He said that the freedom of expression is subject to limitations under Article 19, adding that Nawaz Sharif misled the public with his speech, hence, a contempt of court proceedings should be initiated against him.
The Assistant Attorney General opposed the petition.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani remarked that a similar case is also in the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of Pakistan can take suo moto notice.
The court after listening to the arguments of both parties reserved the verdict.
