WASHINGTON – The judge of a court in the United States has ordered Iran topay $6 billion in damages to the families of the victims of 9/11 attacksafter the country was found guilty of aiding the Al-Qaeda terrorist networkin the deadly and devastating attacks.
The order was issued by a federal judge George B. Daniels in New York onTuesday after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Central Bank ofthe Islamic Republic of Iran were found liable for the deaths of 1,008people.
“In December 2011, a New York federal court held a hearing and found thatthe evidence presented established that Iran’s provision of materialsupport to al-Qaeda was a cause of the 9/11 attacks and the resultingdamage, injuries, and deaths,” attorney Robert Haefele was quoted as sayingby ABC News.
The government of Iran has not formally commented regarding the verdictissued by the court so far.
But the observers believe that Iran has never responded to the lawsuit andis unlikely to ever pay with the news outlet stating that the judgment islargely symbolic.
The judgment is part of the larger case the 9/11 families are pursuingagainst Saudi Arabia. There’s a conference in that case later this month, according to ABC News.
