LAHORE (APP): A steering committee in its meeting approved the establishment of a special monitoring unit (SMU) proposal of Shehr-e-Khamoshan authority in Punjab.

The committee headed by Khawaja Ahmad Hassan directed the SMU to finalize details and function of the authority to be sent to cabinet.

The participants of the meeting included Salman Sufi, senior member SMU, Secretary LG & CD, Secretary Auqaf and Director Law.

Salman Sufi informed that Sheher-e-Khamoshan Model Graveyard Project was an initiative of the Chief Minister's Special Monitoring Unit's (Law & Order) to overcome problems of existing overcrowded graveyards and to build new graveyards with necessary infrastructure facilities like hearse service, mortuary, and a toll free helpline which will provide all burial related services on one phone call.

These are already under construction in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Sargodha.

He informed it had been decided that a new legislation would be enacted to create the Shehr-e-Khamoshan authority which would complement the local governmentand will establish graveyards on its request.

He said the authority would have one-line budget. It would have enforcement, architectural & engineering and administration and finance wings.

A separate enforcement division would have a fully equipped force that would be deployed at every Shehr-e-Khamoshan to secure its property in case of encroachments.

"It will also ensure trouble-free functioning at all levels. Furthermore, the district implementation arm will oversee the functioning and ensure smooth operations", he added.

He said that local government representative would be a part of the district level infrastructure of the authority.
