PEMRA directs all satellite television networks,FM Radios,Cable networks to stop airing Indian channels

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PERMA) issued directives to all satellite television channels, all FM radio stations, all distribution service license holders including cable television networks, Internet Protocol television, and Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service license holders and all landing rights permission holders to comply with the PEMRA decision and Supreme Court orders and immediately stop airing Indian channels and content.

The statement said that PEMRA Authority had decided to ban Indian channels and Indian content on Oct 19,2016 but a media house challenged the decision and got stay from the Lahore High Court. However, PEMRA challenged the LHC stay in the Supreme Court which on Oct 27 this year suspended the operation of impugned judgment and directed that PEMRA should take strict action against the airing of Indian channels as per law and compliance report be accordingly filed.

In the directive, the PEMRA further said that any non-compliance would amount to contempt of court and shall also be liable to be punished under Section 30 of PEMRA (Amendment) Act-2007 which may result in suspension or revocation of license.
