Olive Cultivation in Pakistan: Measures to improve the yield

LAHORE (APP): Research on yielding technology of Olive is significant to increase the production of the commodity.

It was disclosed by agriculture experts while talking to APP on Sunday. They said Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpinid would cooperate with research institutions for carrying out research on Olive besides making arrangements for the training of the farmers.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the recent meeting held at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpinid, Punjab Agriculture Secretary Captain (R) Muhammad Mehmood said a research centre on Olive would be set up in Chakwal, a district of Pothohar region, while its subordinate centres would be established in different parts of the province.

The secretary emphasized that research institutions and the university should jointly conduct research on the yielding technology of the Olive.

A nursery would be set up at government level for the preparation of healthy and suitable kind of Olive plants whereas for the promotion of Olive cultivation in the region people from private sector would be given training, he added.

The experts said Olive was a high-value agricultural product through which a handsome amount of foreign exchange could be earned.
