ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Imran Khan is likely to appoint DG MilitaryIntelligence Lieutenant General Asim Munir as the new DG Inter ServicesIntelligence.
PM Khan will appoint the new head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)after the incumbent chief of the country’s premier spy agency, Lt-GeneralNaveed Mukhtar, is retiring today (Monday).
According to media reports, DG Military Intelligence (MI) Lt-General AsimMunir would be appointed as new ISI chief.
Traditionally, the coveted slot of DG ISI, considered the most powerfulafter the army chief’s post, goes to a three-star general with aconsiderable experience of working in intelligence agencies.
If this patron remains, the new ISI chief should be from thefollowing recently promoted three officers — Lt. General Nadeem Zaki Manj,Lt. General Asim Munir and Lt. General Waseem Ashraf.
Both Gen Zaki and Gen Munir served as DG military intelligence whileGeneral Ashraf had the experience of working in the ISI.

This would be the first major appointment the prime minister is going tomake in the security establishment.
Within weeks of taking the charge, the prime minister visited theheadquarters of the ISI in Islamabad.
He praised the intelligence agency for its contribution in the fightagainst terrorism, declaring the ISI as one of the world’s best spy agency.
