DHAKA: Thousands throng streets of Dhaka against Haseena Wajid Secularism for dropping Islam as state religion.
Bangladesh was considered as secular state soon after its independence in 1971 but a military dictator H.M Ershad declared Islam as state religion in 1988.
A petition was also filled to challenge the constitutional provision of state religion by 15 eminent citizens in 1988.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena Wajid restored the secularism through 15th Amendment to the constitution in 2011 but Islam remained the state religion.
More than 90 percent population is Muslim while rest includes Hindus, Buddhists and others.
High Court is hearing the petition of removal of Islam as the state’s official religion.
Muslim Religious groups held protest and claimed to paralyze the state if it removed Islam as official religion.
A participant said “We are here to give a message to authorities that we will not tolerate any move to cancel Islam as state religion. We will resist such moves at any cost.”
