Federal government may terminate services of more than 30,000 government employees: Report

ISLAMABAD: Federal government may terminate services of more than 30,000government employees, Media Report has revealed citing government sources.

As per the media report, government may lay off more than 30,000 employeesof some 20 state institutions before June 2020, apparently to plugfinancial imbalances and meet the fiscal deficit of the country, PakistanToday has learnt.

However, the Ministry of Finance, while confirming the privatisation of atleast 10 institutions in the near future, refused to give any number on thetermination of employees.

According to sources privy to the matter, the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)government has been considering the termination of over 30,000 employeesbesides privatisation of some 20 important institutes before theannouncement of next financial year’s budget.

They said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials had movedthis proposal, convincing the finance ministry to lay off thousands ofemployees and privatise important institutes in order to address financialimbalances and meet the fiscal deficit.

“A body constituted by the Ministry of Finance has been working andpreparing the list of government employees who will be terminated as percommitment with the IMF,” sources added.

They said the finance ministry and the Privatisation Commission wouldensure the bidding process for the privatisation of state-owned entitieswhile the list of terminated employees shall be completed by the end of2019 or start of 2020.
