WASHINGTON – Russia and China veto pro United States resolution in UNSecurity Council.
A resolution co-sponsored by Germany, Belgium and Kuwait and supported bythe UN humanitarian office got 13 “yes” votes in the 15-member council, butwas vetoed by Russia, the Syrian government’s closest ally, and China.
It would have extended the mandate for six months and cut one of the fourcrossing points.
“The result of the vote is as follows – 13 votes in favor, two votesagainst. The draft resolution has not been adopted, owing to the negativevote of permanent members of the Council,” said Kelly Craft, US Ambassadorto the United Nations. “I am sitting here before each of you in a state ofshock.
The consequences of the Russian Federation and China’s vetoes of thisSecurity Council resolution will be disastrous. This decision is reckless, irresponsible and cruel.”
