Indefinite curfew imposed in India after violent clashes erupt over Citizen Amendment Bill 2019

NEW DELHI – Indefinite curfew imposed in India after violent clashes eruptover Citizen Amendment Bill 2019.

Amid violent protests over Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 in Assam, anindefinite curfew was imposed in Guwahati on Wednesday evening. The curfewthat was earlier imposed from 6.15 pm on Wednesday till 7 am on Thursdayhas now been extended till an indefinite period.

Guwahati police commissioner Deepak Kumar said, “Curfew has been imposed inGuwahati (Assam) since 6:15 pm today. It will remain imposed until normalcyis restored here.”

The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has announced a shutdown inAssam on Thursday. A bus was torched by protesters, near Janta Bhawan inDispur.

Two columns of Army which were on standby at Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh havebeen rushed to Guwahati after the situation escalated. Both the columnshave been deployed in Guwahati.

The Bill seeks to give citizenship to refugees from the Hindu, Christian,Sikh, Buddhist and Zoroastrian communities fleeing religious persecutionfrom Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
