Planning Minister Asad Umar vows to move Pakistan towards digital economy

ISLAMABAD – Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umer has said thegovernment is striving to ensure efficient delivery of services to thepeople by using the latest technology.

He was addressing a conference titled Sustainable Development in a DigitalSociety organized by Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabadon Tuesday.

He pointed out that efforts have also been made to bridge the digitaldivide between the urban centers and the remote areas. In this regard, theUniversal Service Fund has played an important role in development oftelecommunication services in unserved and underserved areas of the country.

The Minister pointed out that revenue generation and documentation ofeconomy has been a major challenge for the country and initiatives havebeen taken to use the technology to achieve this target.

Asad Umar said that promotion of digital economy is of extreme importancefor Pakistan to move forward on the path of progress and development.

Former Chairman Board of Investment Haroon Sharif said Pakistan shouldpromote cooperation with China in the realm of technology.

In his remarks, Executive Director of Sustainable Development PolicyInstitute Abid Qaiyum Sulheri stressed that Pakistan should be prepared toadopt the fourth industrial revolution, which offers both challenges andopportunities to Pakistan.

Delegates from eighteen countries are attending the conference.
