Pakistan faces the single day worst shock over the Anti Polio Front

PESHAWAR: Pakistan faces the single day worst shock over the Anti PolioFront.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday reported 13 new cases of polio, the highestnumber for the province in a single day, taking the nationwide toll to 25in the current year.

According to the health department officials and Emergency Operation Centre(EOC) in Peshawar, the cases were mostly called circulating vaccine-derivedpoliovirus (cVDP2) or Type 2 polio.

Seven of the cases were reported from Khyber tribal district, while onecase each was reported from Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Mardan, Nowshera, Bajaurand Lower Dir.

“Pakistan has this year reported 25 cVDP2 cases, in which KhyberPakhtunkhwa alone had a share of 24,” the report said.

“The reason of cVDPV2 outbreak is the result of a cohort of childrenwithout mucosal immunity to type 2 poliovirus.

The cVDPVs occurs when supplementary immunisation activities (SIAs)/poliorounds are poorly conducted and the population is left susceptible topoliovirus whether from vaccine-derived or wild poliovirus,” a seniorpublic health specialist told *The News.*
