ISLAMABAD:Electricity prices in Pakistan likely to witness a massiveincrease.
The country’s power tariff may witness an increase of Rs3.506 per unitunder the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism, as the National ElectricPower Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has accepted the plea of Central PowerPurchasing Agency (CPPA) in this regard.
According to sources, after accepting the CPPA application, NEPRA hascalled a public hearing to consider the proposed adjustments for the monthsof December 2019 and January 2020.
“All the interested/affected parties are invited to raise written/oralobjections as permissible under the law at the public hearings, which wouldbe held on March 25 at the NEPRA headquarters,” NEPRA stated in its publicnotice.
As per details, the CPPA, on behalf of power distributing companies(DISCOs), has requested NEPRA to increase power price by Rs1.4883 per unitfor December 2019 and Rs2.0177 per unit for January 2020 due to variationsregistered in reference fuel charges and actual fuel charges during thesaid two months.
It is relevant to note that NEPRA had earlier set reference fuel charges atRs4.4602 per unit for December 2019 and Rs5.7576 per unit for January 2020.
The sources used to generate energy in the month of December 2019,including hydel, coal, high-speed diesel, residual fuel oil, gas,re-gasified liquefied natural gas, nuclear, import (Iran), wind, bagasse,solar etc, contributed 7,556.87 gigwhat hours (GWh) at a cost of Rs37,843million (Rs5.0078 per unit) while net delivered to DISCOs was 7,309.49GWhat a cost of Rs47,350 million (Rs6.4779 per unit).

Similarly, total energy generated in the month of January 2020 with abovementioned sources was 7,793.67GWh at a cost of Rs53,129 million (Rs5.9858per unit) while net delivered to DISCOs was 7,332.37 GWh at a cost ofRs53,129 million (Rs7.2459 per unit).
As per the sources, the [power regulatory authority, after hearing theCPPA’s plea, is likely to reserve its judgment instead of announcing thedecision on the matter apparently due to a decision of the federal cabinetto keep the power prices unchanged till June 2020.
It is pertinent to mention that the federal cabinet, during its Feb 25meeting, had reaffirmed its earlier decision to keep the prices of gas andelectricity unchanged till June 2020.
Pursuant to Section 31 (7) of the NEPRA Act (XL of 1997) and the mechanismfor monthly fuel price adjustment prescribed by the authority in the tariffdeterminations of ex-WAPDA DISCOs, the authority may on account of anyvariations in the fuel charges and policy guidelines as the federalgovernment may issue and notify the tariff so adjusted in the officialgazette.
