NEW DELHI: Death toll rises further as New Delhi becomes the death groundfor Indian Minority Muslims.
The death toll from the clashes between Hindus and minority Muslims over acontroversial citizenship law rose to 27 in New Delhi on Wednesday as theIndian capital has become a death ground for Muslims.
As the Indian capital saw the worst anti-Muslim violence in decades, PrimeMinister Narendra Modi turned to Twitter, saying: “I appeal to my sistersand brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times.”
Police and paramilitary forces patrolled the streets in far greater numberson Wednesday. Parts of the riot-hit areas were deserted. Modi’s appeal cameafter a barrage of criticism from opposition parties over the government’sfailure to control the violence, despite the use of tear gas, pellets, andsmoke grenades.
Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi called for the resignation of HomeMinister Amit Shah, who is directly responsible for law and order in thecapital.
On the other hand, Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, who wastasked to restore normalcy amid violence in Delhi, again visited theJafrabad neighbourhood on Wednesday evening to check up on security andspeak with the people there.
