Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan vows for teaching Israel a lesson

Turkey’s president said late Thursday that he expects Nigeria to showsolidarity with the Palestinian people amid the latest attacks by Israel onJerusalem and Gaza.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buharidiscussed the necessary international attitude towards Israel in responseto the state’s inhumane attacks on Palestine in a phone call, according toa statement by Turkey’s Communications Directorate.

Erdogan said Turkey is trying to get the international community to teach alesson to Israel, “which lacks law, justice and a conscience.”

He underscored that he expects Nigeria to show solidarity with thePalestinians “in this rightful cause.”

Israel’s ongoing offensive on Gaza has left 103 dead, including 27 childrenand 11 women, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Another 580people have been injured.

Seven Israelis have been killed in the recent violence — six in rocketattacks, in addition to a soldier who was killed when an anti-tank guidedmissile struck his jeep.

Tensions have been running high in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood inoccupied East Jerusalem over the past month as Israeli settlers haverepeatedly clashed with residents following a court order for the evictionof Palestinian families in the area. The Israeli Supreme Court laterdelayed a hearing on the matter on an appeal.

Palestinians protesting in solidarity with residents of Sheikh Jarrah havealso been targeted by Israeli forces and settler groups.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and annexedthe entire city in 1980 in a move that has never been recognized by theinternational community.
