ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is disappointed at the adoption of a resolution at theEuropean Parliament on blasphemy laws in the country, said foreign officein a statement.
The EU Parliament’s resolution calls for a review of the GSP+ statusgranted to Pakistan in view of an increase in the use of blasphemyaccusations.
The resolution also urged Pakistani government to “unequivocally condemn”incitement to violence and discrimination against religions minorities inthe country. It also expressed concerns over prevailing anti-Frenchsentiment in the country.
The EU Parliament “calls on the Commission and the European External ActionService (EEAS) to immediately review Pakistan’s eligibility for GSP+ statusin the light of current events and whether there is sufficient reason toinitiate a procedure for the temporary withdrawal of this status and thebenefits that come with it, and to report to the European Parliament onthis matter as soon as possible”, according to the resolution.
The FO in the statement said, “The discourse in the European Parliamentreflects a lack of understanding in the context of blasphemy laws andassociated religious sensitivities in Pakistan – and in the wider Muslimworld. The unwarranted commentary about Pakistan’s judicial system anddomestic laws are regrettable”.
Pakistan is a parliamentary democracy with a vibrant civil society, freemedia and independent judiciary, which remains fully committed to thepromotion and protection of human rights for all its citizens withoutdiscrimination.
“We are proud of our minorities who enjoy equal rights and completeprotection of fundamental freedoms as enshrined in the Constitution.Judicial and administrative mechanisms and remedies are in place to guardagainst any human rights violations.
“Pakistan has played an active role in promoting freedom of religion orbelief, tolerance and inter-faith harmony. At a time of rising Islamophobiaand populism, the international community must exhibit a common resolve tofight xenophobia, intolerance and incitement to violence based on religionor belief and work together to strengthen peaceful co-existence,” it said.
Pakistan and the EU have multiple mechanisms in place to discuss entirespectrum of bilateral relations, including a dedicated Dialogue onDemocracy, Rule of Law, Governance and Human Rights. We would continue toremain positively engaged with the EU on all issues of mutual interest.
