Pakistan Ambassador at UN takes strong principled stance against India at UNSC reforms

NEW YORK – At the UN, Pakistan has firmly opposed the creation of newpermanent seats in the security council.

Addressing the first meeting of Intergovernmental Negotiations Frameworkduring the seventy fifth session of the UN, Pakistan’s PermanentRepresentative at the world body Munir Akram said creation of new permanentseats will make the Security Council less representative, less effective,more divided and erode the principle of sovereign equality of states.

Munir Akram reiterated Islamabad’s principled position for comprehensivereforms of the Security Council which meets the interests of all memberstates.

The Permanent Representative said that the proposal of United for Consensus(UfC) group to have twenty one non-permanent seats would redress thedeficit of equitable representation in the Security Council. He said italso accommodates the interests of all groups including the African, theArab, the OIC and Small Island Developing Sates.
