UN to resume Secuirty Council reforms negotiations

The long-running Inter-Governmental Negotiations, aimed at reforming the UNSecurity Council, will resume on 25th of this month, to build on the workdone in its previous meetings.

This was stated by President UN General Assembly Volkan Bozkir at a pressconference in New York.

He said he has held negotiations with almost every group involved in thereform process but it is a very complex challenge that is closely linked topeace and security.

Bozkir said dialogue among member states is the most effective way to bringthe reform process forward.

Despite a general agreement on enlarging the Security Council, memberstates remain sharply divided over the details.

The Pakistan and Italy-led “Uniting for Consensus” group firmly opposes anyadditional permanent members, arguing that such move will not make the bodymore effective and undermine the fundamental principle of democracy that isbased on periodic elections.

During a General Assembly debate on the Security Council reform inNovember, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram said the UfC’s proposalreflect the most suitable basis for an agreement on comprehensive reforms.

He said if it is approved, it will obtain the largest possible support inthe General Assembly and essential ratification of all five permanentmembers.
