Researchers from Quaid-i-Azam University have identified critical changesin coronavirus during its local transmissions in different countriesincluding Pakistan.
Published in a prestigious journal ‘Genes and Immunity’ by ‘Nature’, theresearch found that those specific changes had improved the ability ofcoronavirus to inhibit the human immune system.
As a result, it spreads very fast to the lower respiratory tract of humansand causes severe respiratory syndrome.
The lead researcher, Dr Amir Ali Abbasi said his scientific work can assistin designing small-molecule inhibitors that perturb specific functions ofcoronavirus in the suppression of host immunity, which may help to reducedisease burden and assist recovery of patients.
