In a surprise, Pakistan may lift ban on import of cotton and sugar from India

Islamabad: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet willtake up two summaries of the commerce and textile ministry to lift ban onimport of cotton and white sugar from India on Wednesday.

As per details, Pakistan is considering reopening Indo-Pak trade as thebilateral trade between Pakistan and India remained suspended from 2019.

The commerce and textile ministry submitted a summary on the StrategicTrade Policy Framework (STPF). The decision to consider lifting the banfrom India come as a relief for the textile and commerce sector, whichseeks access to cheap raw materials.

As per summary, the trade sector foresees over Rs. 01 trillion support fromSTPF.

In addition, the summary also sought permission to allow import of whitesugar from India through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).

The ECC approval was also sought to register pink rock salt as ageographical indication by Pakistan.

There are also summaries regarding approval of technical supplementarygrants for various divisions.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, as in-charge of the Commerce and TextileMinistry, has already approved the summary.
