NEW YORK – Efforts of Prime Minister Imran Khan bore fruit as the US SenateForeign Relations Committee has spoken out against India and wrote a letterto US Secretary of Defence Lloyd J Austin, urging him to ask India to stopviolations of human rights in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir(IIOJ&K).
The letter written by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman SenatorRobert Menendez asked Austin to oppose the imposition of Article 370 inKashmir and Indian missile defence system.
“Getting the US-India partnership right is critical to addressing21st-century challenges, and that includes urging the Indian government touphold democratic values and human rights.”
He urged Austin to convey to the Indian leadership that in all areas,“including security cooperation, the US-India partnership must rest onadherence to democratic values. We must acknowledge that the partnership isstrongest when based on shared democratic values and the Indian governmenthas been trending away from those values”.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman said that the Indiangovernment’s ongoing crackdown on farmers peacefully protesting new farminglaws and corresponding intimidation of journalists and government criticsonly underscores the deteriorating situation of democracy in India.
