Supreme Court gives verdict over issue of IHC lawyers chambers demolition by CDA

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court (SC) has stopped the Capital DevelopmentAuthority (CDA) from demolishing the illegal chambers of lawyers inIslamabad’s F-8 till March 2.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the appealagainst demolition of the illegal chambers of lawyers. During the hearing,many lawyers gathered at the rostrum and the top judge directed them toleave the court. “The court won’t be pressured by anyone,” Chief JusticeGulzar Ahmed remarked.

“If a lawyer wants to practice then he/she will have to make their ownoffices, said the judge. “Lawyers aren’t supposed to encroach on publicland. The bar association does not have the right to lease out chambers tolawyers,” he added.

The court has issued notices to the attorney-general and advocate-general.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that three-story chambers were built on afootball ground. Justice Mazahar Naqvi said five-acre land has separatelybeen allotted for lawyers’ chambers. The hearing was adjourned.

On February 16, the Islamabad High Court ruled that the illegal chambers oflawyers built on a playground in Sector F-8 should be demolished.
