WASHINGTON: The United States said on Friday it intends to revoke theterrorist designation for Yemen’s Houthi movement in response to thecountry’s humanitarian crisis, reversing one of the most criticisedlast-minute decisions of the Trump administration.
The reversal, confirmed by a State Department official, comes a day afterPresident Joe Biden declared a halt to US support for the Saudi Arabia-ledmilitary campaign in Yemen, widely seen as a proxy conflict between SaudiArabia and Iran.- Advertisement –
“Our action is due entirely to the humanitarian consequences of thislast-minute designation from the prior administration, which the UnitedNations and humanitarian organizations have since made clear wouldaccelerate the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” the official said.
