Pakistan faces a setback in new Rule of Law Index 2021 global ranking report

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has slipped 10 places to 130th position in the Rule ofLaw Index 2021 global ranking, as the report shows the South Asian countrydoing badly in the areas of corruption, fundamental rights, order, andsecurity.

The report of the World Justice Project shows Pakistan among thelowest-ranked countries in its adherence to the rule of law [130th out of139 nations].

The country of around 221 million is only ahead of Afghanistan in theregional ranking. Pakistan managed a poor 0.39 score, in the range from 0to 1, with 1 indicating the strongest adherence to the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the country is among the three worst in respect to order andsecurity, listed at 137 while it stands at the 124th, 123rd, 126th and123rd position in civil justice, regulatory enforcement, fundamentalrights, and corruption, respectively.

Pakistan is in the fourth position out of a total of six regional countriesassessed in the area of the criminal justice system, civil justice, opengovernment, and constraints on government powers.

Earlier, the WJP’s Rule of Law Index (RLI) 2020 listed Pakistan at 120thwhereas the country was ranked at 117 in 2019.

The report by the international civil society organization measures rulesof law and jurisdiction across eight primary factors including Constraintson Government Powers, Absence of Corruption, Open Government, FundamentalRights, Order and Security, Regulatory Enforcement, Civil Justice, andCriminal Justice.
