Pakistan strongly responds over illegal sale of uranium in Indian black market

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan on Friday expressed deep concern over the illegalsales of Uranium in India, and demanded a thorough investigation of suchincidents.

Responding to media queries about reports of attempted illicit Uraniumsales in India, Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said thatwe have seen the reports about yet another incident of attempted illegalsale of six kilograms of Uranium in India.

Chaudhri said a similar incident involving seven kilogram of Uranium in theIndian state of Maharashtra last month and other such reports in the pastare a matter of deep concern as they point to lax controls, poor regulatoryand enforcement mechanisms, as well as possible existence of a black marketfor nuclear materials inside India.

The spokesperson went on to say that the United Nations Security CouncilResolution 1540 and the IAEA Convention on the Physical Protection ofNuclear Material (CPPNM) make it binding on states to ensure stringentmeasures to prevent nuclear material from falling into wrong hands.

He said, “Pakistan reiterates its call for thorough investigation of suchincidents and measures for strengthening the security of nuclear materialsto prevent their diversion.”

“It is equally important to ascertain the intent and ultimate user of theattempted Uranium sale given its relevance to international peace andsecurity as well as the sanctity of global non-proliferation regime,”Chaudhri added.
