PM Imran Khan address at the special event on green financing innovations in country

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has termed that improving theenvironment is essential for future generations.

The prime minister said while addressing a special event on Green FinancingInnovations in the country, organized by Ministry of Climate Change inconnection with World Environment Day on Thursday. The event also featureda World Bank review report on blue carbon

He has emphasized on achieving the tree plantation target under Ten BillionTree Tsunami Program (TBTTP) to protect environmental future of the nation.

PM Imran Khan termed the target of 10 billion trees as a great need ofPakistan. “Everyone has to play a role in preventing global warming.Awareness among children is welcome to plant more trees,” he added.

Underlining the importance of environmental protection for a better futureof the next generations, he called for establishing national parks andpromoting urban forestry.

The prime minister said it is welcoming that people have started developingawareness about tree plantation, and school children are also taking partin the campaign. He said every citizen should contribute to making thecountry green.

Imran Khan said it is encouraging that mangrove cover has been expanding inPakistan for the last twenty years. He stressed the need for using newtechniques adopted by China to raise forests in the country.

Imran Khan said Pakistan contributes to global carbon emission less thanone percent; however, it is one of the most vulnerable countries in respectof global warming effects due to glacier melting. He said the world startedgiving attention to climate change issue about twenty years ago and it isnow realizing gravity of the situation. He said Pakistan will take the leadin the global efforts for environmental protection.

On the occasion, a joint statement was signed to initiate dialogue with theUnited Kingdom, Germany and Canada for Pakistan’s first Nature Bond, andthe possibility of a “Debt for Nature” Swap.

World Bank’s study on “Blue Carbon” was also presented which, for the firsttime, gives an economic value to the country’s unvalued marine wealthincluding Pakistan’s mangroves and seagrasses.

An MoU with China’s Elion group was also signed for piloting greenecological zones in Pakistan.
