PTI government earns international praise for 10 billion tree tsunami project

Prime Minister Imran Khan linkappreciatedhis team’s performance as UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has praised the10 billion Tree Tsunami projectlink.

As the world prepares to mark five decades of the environmental movement atStockholm +50 this June, UNEP link lookingback at projects and initiatives that have positively impacted theenvironment and people’s lives – and how we can accelerate action onsustainability.

Almost one year into the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration2021-2030, Pakistan is showing what is possible by pushing forward on itsTen Billion Tree Tsunami Projectlink (TBTTP).

The ambitious project – which aims to revive forest and wildlife resourcesin Pakistan and bring a host of other benefits – planted 1.42 billion treesbetween 2019 and December 2021, covering 1.36 million acres across almost10,000 sites.

“Large scale restoration initiatives such as The Ten Billion Tree TsunamiProject linkcentral to Pakistan’s efforts to support the UN Decade and to increaseecosystem restoration,” said Dechen Tsering, UNEP’s Regional Director forAsia and the Pacific.

“We are at a point in history where we need to act, and Pakistan is leadingon this important effort.”

Pakistan, which hosted World Environment Day in 2021, is particularlyvulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change.
