Pakistan and China to expedite 8 billion mega project

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority and the NationalDevelopment & Reform Commission (NDRC) of China have agreed to expedite thepace of work on the Main Line 1 [ML-1] Karachi-Peshawar Railway project.

The two entities virtually met on Thursday to review progress on thedecisions made during the recent visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan toChina. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on CPEC Affairs, KhalidMansoor, and Director-General NDRC co-chaired the meeting which was alsoattended by the Ambassador of Pakistan to China.

Mansoor observed that the prime minister’s meeting with the Chineseleadership was extremely fruitful. He said that the relevant institutionsof the two countries were taking steps to translate the understandingsreached at the highest level into actions.

The Direct0r-General NDRC stated that the relevant Chinese institutionswere already taking necessary actions to implement the understandingsreached during the visit. He said China attached high importance to theML-1 project, adding that several internal meetings between the NationalRailway Administration and other relevant institutions had been held towork out the modalities and prepare for executing the first phase of theproject.

The meeting decided that Pakistan Railways will immediately contact theNational Railway Administration (NEA), to work out further details.

The meeting also discussed projects in the power sector including the300-MW power project in Gwadar and the 1320-MW Thar Coal Block-1 powerproject. All actions relating to these projects have been completed onPakistan’s side. It was decided that the Chinese side would expedite thenext steps relating to these projects.
