NA standing committee approved NAB Amendment Bill 2022

National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Mondayapproved the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Amendment Bill 2022.

According to the newly approved bill, the anti-graft watchdog cannotinvestigate corruption cases amounting to less than Rs 50 million.

The amended bill also states that NAB cannot notify and summon any personuntil concrete evidence is available.

The NAB bill has also made it clear that it will now be mandatory to sharedetails of the case in the notice, whereas the accused person cannot besentenced in absence.

The tenure of the NAB prosecutor general will be extendable, but can onlybe approved by the President or the federal government.

On the occasion, State Minister for Law Shahdat Awan said NAB will shouldonly get involved with mega corruption cases. “They will now be only ableto investigate cases worth more than Rs 50 million.”

He added that in order to reopen an old case, new evidence will have to besubmitted to court.
