Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Jay Shah, in response to theproposition put forth by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf,has agreed to revisit the circumstances arising from incessant rains in SriLanka, which pose a threat to the Asia Cup 2023 schedule. This pivotaldevelopment emerged following the washout of the highly anticipatedPakistan vs. India clash on Saturday due to heavy downpours in Pallekelle.
Additionally, concerns loom over the Super 4 phase of the tournamentscheduled in Colombo, where urban flooding has occurred as a result of therelentless rainfall.
Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, took the initiative to engage with ACCPresident Jay Shah, highlighting the anticipated further rainfall in SriLanka that could disrupt the matches, while Pakistan enjoys clear weatherconditions without any rain forecasts. Emphasizing the significance of theAsia Cup as a premier cricketing event, Ashraf asserted that it should notsuccumb to the mercy of unpredictable weather conditions. The ACCpresident, who also serves as the secretary of the Indian cricket board,responded by expressing the need to deliberate on the proposed solution.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan and Pakistani cricket boards, along with the ACC,find themselves in a dilemma due to the uncompromising stance of Indianofficials who oppose relocating matches to Dambulla, citing concerns aboutthe city’s subpar hotel accommodations. Conversely, broadcasters have alsoraised objections to moving the venue to Hambantota due to inadequate hotelarrangements. An emergency meeting of the regional cricket body has beenconvened to address the current situation and make a decision regarding thevenue change within the next 24-36 hours. The PCB has articulated itsconcerns and requested a resolution from the ACC, as they are the hosts ofthe event.
It is essential to note that the Asia Cup 2023 was originally slated to beheld in Pakistan. However, due to the Indian board’s refusal to send theirteam to Pakistan, certain matches had to be relocated to Sri Lanka, settingthe stage for the current challenges faced by the organizers
