New development reported over murder case of journalist Arshad Sharif

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has formed a new 5-member investigationteam (JIT) to probe Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif’s murder, days afterthe country’s top court took suo moto notice of the incident.

A five-member bench of led by the CJP Umar Atta Bandial continued the suomoto hearing of the case on Thursday.

After constituting a new investigation team, the federal governmentsubmitted its notification to the apex court in line with the latest orders.

Sajid Kiani from the Intelligence Bureau, Waqar¬uddin Syed of the FederalInvestigation Agency, Murtaza Afzal from Military Intelligence, MuhammadAslam from Inter-Services Intelligence, and Awais Ahmed from capital policehave been named in the JIT to probe the killing.

Authorities will approach Interpol to arrest the suspects in the case ifrequired, local media reports said.

During today’s hearing, the bench asked the time frame to conclude theinvestigation to which officials said the probe would be dependent on theKenyan officials, assuring all possible efforts to complete the probe atthe earliest possible time.

The court later directed officials to submit a progress report to thecourt every two weeks. The hearing was then adjourned for a month.
