Lt General Faiz Hameed resigns from service

ISLAMABAD – Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed Lieutenant has submitted anapplication seeking early retirement to General Headquarters (GHQ), a daybefore the change of command.

Hameed, who was serving as commander of the Bahawalpur Corps, is slated toretire in April next year however he decides to step down ahead of thetransition of the military leadership.

Reports quoting sources claimed that the former chief of the Inter-ServiceIntelligence (ISI) sent his resignation to the high command, andauthorities already approved his resignation.

Amid the media reports, there is no official confirmation from the militarymedia wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) about thedevelopment; the Army spokesperson or Gen Faiz Hamid himself has not deniedthe reports.

The three-star general was among the six senior-most generals whose namewas included by Army General Headquarters (GHQ) in the list of potentialcandidates for the two top military offices, sent to Prime Minister ShehbazSharif for approval.

Meanwhile, the transition of the top army leadership and the passing of thebaton will take place at the General Headquarters (GHQ) today after sixyears.

Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed is a three-star general of the PakistanArmy’s Baloch Regiment. He last served as Bahawalpur Corps Commander.Previously, he served as commander of the Peshawar Corps for less than ayear.

The decorated officer has served as the 24th Director General of Pakistan’spremier spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and as GOC 16thInfantry Division Pano Akil.

Hameed had served in the spy agency for two-and-a-half years before beingpromoted to the rank of Lt Gen. He was appointed as ISI head at a crucialtime due to several external and internal security challenges.
