In a State Department media briefing on Tuesday, it was stated that theglobal Khalistan Referendum campaign, managed by the advocacy group “SikhsFor Justice” and involving tens of thousands of Sikhs in the US, issafeguarded by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
When asked about Washington’s stance on this campaign, given India’scriticism, the spokesperson refrained from commenting on specifics butnoted that campaigns like the Khalistan Referendum enjoy protection underUS laws.
He emphasized that individuals have the right to freedom of speech andpeaceful assembly in the United States, aligning with the First Amendmentand adhering to applicable federal and local regulations.
This discussion followed the controversy surrounding the assassination ofpro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar by Indian government agents inCanada’s largest Gurdwara in British Columbia.
