5G technology in Pakistan, launch date revealed

Islamabad: Pakistan is preparing to introduce 5G mobile phone connectivityby August 2024, as announced by the Ministry of Information Technology andTelecommunication. This move comes in response to the increasing demand forfaster and more advanced telecommunications services.

The ministry has revealed a comprehensive strategy for the introduction of5G services in the country. This strategy includes engaging aninternational consultant to provide guidance for the project, establishingan Inter-Ministerial Advisory Committee to shape the future of 5G inPakistan, and formulating an auction policy and business plan.

The government also plans to draw inspiration from successful models incountries like Bangladesh for the spectrum auction process. Importantly,the strategy emphasizes that spectrum allocation will not be granted to anysingle operator without a competitive process to ensure fairness andpromote a competitive environment.

Before the auction of the highly sought-after 600 MHz spectrum, thebusiness plan highlights the need for significant reforms in the telecomsector. This includes addressing ongoing court cases related to spectrumallocation and creating incentives for telecom operators to activelyparticipate in the auction.

To further encourage the expansion of 5G services, the strategy includesprovisions for facilitating the opening of Letter of Credits (LC) andlaying fiber optic cables.

The launch of 5G services in Pakistan represents a significant milestonein technological advancement and is expected to transform the way peoplecommunicate and access content.
