Former English cricketer Mark Nicholas has given a surprising piece ofadvice, suggesting that One Day International (ODI) cricket should belimited to only World Cup events. He further explained that in today’s era, players tend to prefer franchise cricket and Twenty20 cricket over ODIs.Nicholas believes that the dynamics of cricket have changed significantlyin the current era.
He stated that they understand that ODIs should only be reserved for theWorld Cup because these matches are losing their appeal and aren’t drawinglarge crowds in many countries.
At present, Twenty20 cricket holds tremendous power, not just in terms ofticket sales but also in terms of fan engagement.
Nicholas noted the extraordinary attraction of Twenty20 cricket andexpressed his belief that scheduling 50-over cricket alongside it would bethe death knell for ODI cricket.
The future of One Day International cricket has been a subject of debate inrecent years, with several former cricketers expressing their opinions, andsome renowned players have already retired from the format.
Mark Nicholas, aged 66, is of the opinion that at this time, he has takenup the shortest format of cricket, the 50-over format.
