On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) initiated legal proceedings toensure that general elections in Pakistan take place within a 90-daytimefram. The LHC’s decision came as a response to a petition filed byBarrister Muqsat Saleem, prompting the court to issue notices to severalrespondents, including the Election Commission of Pakistan and thePresident of Pakistan.
Remarkably, during the court proceedings, it was noted that no politicalparty had demonstrated a keen interest in ensuring the conduction ofelections within this 90-day window, as the plea had been submitted by anindividual. Barrister Muqsat Saleem’s plea contended that schedulinggeneral elections for January constituted a ‘violation’ of the constitutionand the court’s directives.
Furthermore, the petition urged the court to instruct President Arif Alvito announce the election date while simultaneously revoking thenotification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan pertaining toelections in January. It is worth noting that just the previous month, theElection Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had formally announced its intentionto hold the general elections during the final week of January 2024.
In response to these developments, the Lahore High Court has embarked on alegal journey to address the crucial issue of the election timeline, withBarrister Muqsat Saleem’s plea serving as a pivotal point of contention inthis ongoing judicial process.
