The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unequivocally stated that theboundary count-back rule, which caused significant controversy during the2019 ODI World Cup final, will not be a determining factor in the 2023World Cup.
In the memorable 2019 final, the victors were determined through theboundary count-back rule after the super over concluded in a tie. Englandclinched the title as they had struck more boundaries (26) than New Zealand(17).
For the upcoming ICC World Cup in 2023, the boundary count-back rule hasbeen discarded. Instead, tied matches will be resolved through Super Overs, and in the rare instance of a tied Super Over, subsequent Super Overs willbe played to determine the winner.
It is important to note that in 2019, this change in protocol stemmed froma recommendation put forth by the ICC Cricket Committee, led by formerIndia skipper Anil Kumble. The Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC)subsequently approved the use of Super Overs as a means to decide resultsin ICC events.
This decision was based on the consensus that Super Overs provided anexhilarating and captivating conclusion to the game, and this rule willremain in place for all matches in both the ODI and T20I World Cups.
The highly anticipated mega event is scheduled to commence on October 5th,2023, in India, promising an exciting and boundary-count-free competitionfor cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
