Nawaz Sharif pardons former COAS and DG ISI, will not pursue accountability demand: report

In London, Shahbaz Sharif, the President of the Muslim League (N), hasconvinced Nawaz Sharif to forget his stance on demands of accountability offormer military officials in connection with “unconstitutional actions”against his elder brother, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

This implies that Nawaz Sharif is inclined towards compromise. He is likelyto prioritize the country’s economic stability and the maintenance ofconstitutional principles.

According to a report published in the English newspaper “The Tribune,” itis claimed by an informed party source that Nawaz Sharif is now open to amore conciliatory approach. He will emphasize strengthening the country’seconomic foundations and upholding constitutional principles.

Sources suggest that the change in the statement is a result of discussionsbetween both Sharif brothers. They also stated that the party’s opinion wasnegative regarding the demands for accountability of former Army ChiefGeneral (Retd.) Qamar Javed Bajwa and former Director General ofInter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General (Retd.) Faiz Hamid.

The Muslim League (N) sources said that there was a concern that takingthis statement forward could lead the party towards a collision course withthe establishment because it had never accepted the accountability of itsfuture or former chiefs.

Muslim League (N) sources mentioned that Nawaz Sharif would focus on theeconomy, unemployment, inflation, and the empowerment of the voters. Theissue of accountability for General (Retd.) Bajwa and Lieutenant General(Retd.) Hamid would gradually become ambiguous. This statement has beentermed “impartial.”

They also claimed that it is an understanding that if the Muslim League (N)comes into power, Nawaz Sharif will choose the center, and Shahbaz Sharifwill return to Punjab, as he did previously.

Muslim League (N) sources stated that Shahbaz Sharif’s visit to London wasnot related to any change in the stance and that there is no connectionbetween the change in position and the statements of the concernedgovernment.
