Umar Saif, the interim Minister of Information Technology, made anannouncement on Tuesday regarding the National Artificial IntelligencePolicy. His team has diligently crafted the draft of this policy and iscurrently engaging in consultations with relevant stakeholders. Theultimate aim is to finalize this policy by December. Artificialintelligence, often abbreviated as AI, is the crux of this endeavor.
AI pertains to the development of computer systems with the capability toexecute tasks that typically demand human intelligence, encompassing taskslike data learning, pattern recognition, decision-making, andproblem-solving. AI strives to create machines that emulate human-likethinking and decision-making processes.
In today’s increasingly tech-savvy world, the accessibility of AItechnology has paved the way for governments and private sectors worldwideto harness its potential in their day-to-day operations. Pakistan’splanning ministry recognized the potential in April, highlighting how theincorporation of AI across various government sectors could enhancedecision-making processes, enable personalized medical treatments, andoffer improved learning experiences and solutions that were once beyondreach.
The Information Minister commented on the far-reaching implications of thispolicy and emphasized its open consultation. They’ve solicited publiccomments both from within and outside the country to ensure a comprehensiveperspective. Furthermore, the Minister stressed the importance of trainingindividuals in AI skills in alignment with this policy, recognizing theinherent value in such expertise.
With a targeted goal of finalizing and notifying the AI policy by December,Pakistan’s official artificial intelligence strategy is set to evolvethrough collaboration with stakeholders before it reaches the federalcabinet for approval.
This comprehensive policy is founded on four core pillars: enabling AIthrough awareness and readiness, facilitating the AI market, establishing aprogressive and trustworthy environment, and fostering its continuoustransformation and evolution.
