Iranian authorities successfully thwarted a potentially catastrophic eventwhen they discovered and neutralized 30 explosive devices set to detonatesimultaneously in the capital city, Tehran. This remarkable accomplishmentwas announced by Iran’s Tasnim news agency and attributed to the country’sintelligence ministry.
Moreover, in a significant development, 28 individuals with ties to theIslamic State (IS) were apprehended in connection with this nefarious plot.
The intelligence ministry’s statement shed light on the background of theseindividuals, revealing that some were known members of the IS, while othershad affiliations with Takfiri groups operating in conflict zones such asSyria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Thisrevelation underscores the global reach and transnational nature of theextremist threat that Iran faces.
Iran has unfortunately experienced several attacks orchestrated by theIslamic State in the past. One notable incident was the 2017 twin bombingsthat targeted Iran’s parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah RuhollahKhomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.
These acts of terror claimed numerous lives and left a lasting impact onthe nation’s security landscape. Additionally, the more recent attack on aShia shrine in Shiraz last October, resulting in the tragic loss of 15lives, serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing threat posed by extremistgroups.
In light of these recent events, Iran’s security apparatus remains vigilantin its efforts to protect the nation and its citizens from the scourge ofterrorism, with this successful operation serving as a testament to theirdedication and effectiveness in countering such threats.
