SC takes major initiative to bring transparency in handling pending cases

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken a significant step to bringtransparency to the handling of subordinate cases. Under this initiative,statistics for both filed and disposed of cases will be published weekly.

A sanctioned monthly case list will be released, and as of September 18thto 22nd, out of the 225 cases filed, no miscellaneous requests will beincluded. Lawyers have recommended a monthly sanctioned case list for thepreparation of lawyers on both sides.

The Supreme Court will make every effort to implement the sanctioned caselist for four weeks; it has already released the sanctioned case list forOctober, which is available on the Supreme Court website. On the otherhand, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the increasein petroleum product prices.

According to media reports, the request, filed under Article 184(3) of theConstitution by Molvi Iqbal Haider, includes the federal government, theElection Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and OGRA as parties.

The petition requests that the courts instruct the caretaker government touse daily powers only to ensure the certainty of elections within 90 daysand that under the constitution, the caretaker government does not have theauthority to increase petroleum product prices.

It also requests that only elected representatives of the people can raisepetroleum product prices. The petition further asks the courts to restrainany further increase in petroleum product prices until the generalelections.
