On Tuesday night, tragedy struck in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar as a46-year-old religious cleric, Sheikh Zia ur Rehman, met a tragic end. Thisdevout cleric, who also held the role of an administrator at the Jamia AbuBakr Madrassah, was brutally gunned down in a shocking incident. Thedreadful occurrence transpired in close proximity to Gulistan-e-JauharBlock 16, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
The police swiftly initiated an investigation, delving into variouspotential motives behind this heinous act, including the possibility oftargeted killing. At the crime scene, they uncovered a significant piece ofevidence – 11 spent shell casings from two different firearms, a 9mmpistol, and a 30 bore weapon. These findings only added to the perplexitysurrounding the tragic event.
Meanwhile, in a disheartening string of events, this incident comes notlong after the assassination of religious leader Saleem Khatri, who wasfatally shot near Bilal Colony in Karachi by four suspects on motorcycles.Additionally, Karachi had previously witnessed the tragic murder of MaulanaAbdul Qayyum Sufi, another religious scholar and member of the PakistanUlema Association, who fell victim to unidentified armed assailants inGulistan-e-Jauhar Block 9.
His life was tragically cut short while returning home after leading Fajarprayers, and he had also held a prominent position as the head of theNoorani Islamic Centre at Jamia Masjid Muhammadia. These events highlightthe concerning vulnerability faced by religious figures in the region,emphasizing the need for increased security and vigilance in theircommunities
