Negotiations ongoing on the Torkhem Border issue

The Charge d’affaires of Afghanistan in Pakistan engaged in discussionswith Pakistan’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, aiming to resolve the issueof reopening the Torkham border crossing.Pakistan expressed concerns about Afghan forces attempting to establish aborder post on Pakistani territory, which led to the border’s closure aftera recent exchange of fire. Pakistan emphasized its refusal to relinquishits land.

Pakistan’s Special Envoy, Asif Durrani, conveyed to the Afghan Charged’affaires, Sardar Ahmed Shakeeb, that building the border post was seen asan occupation of Pakistani territory. Additionally, Afghan officials wereinformed that their soil had been used to launch a terrorist attack onPakistan’s border district of Chitral.

The Afghan Charge d’affaires expressed the hardship caused by the closureof the Torkham border crossing for both sides, affecting people and trade.Asif Durrani assured the Afghan diplomat that Pakistan would soon reopenthe border.

Despite this, the border remained closed for a third consecutive day,stranding trucks loaded with goods and Afghan nationals traveling toPeshawar for medical treatment or trade.
