The Prosecutor General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Justice(retd) Syed Asghar Haider, tendered his resignation from his position,citing “personal engagements,”. This development has significantimplications for the NAB’s ongoing investigations and proceedings. AsgharHaider’s term was originally scheduled to conclude in February 2024, makinghis departure unexpected.

Inside sources have disclosed that the NAB had already wrapped up itsinvestigation into the high-profile 190 million pounds scandal, and areference related to this case was set to be submitted in court this month.However, Asghar Haider’s resignation has left the NAB unable to proceedwith filing the reference without his approval, creating a considerableobstacle in the legal process.

Moreover, the absence of the prosecutor general has thrown into uncertaintythe scheduling of executive board meetings and the approval of pendingcases. His consent was also a prerequisite for the reinstatement of casesfollowing the Supreme Court’s striking down of NAB amendments.
