Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded an immediateannouncement of the date for general elections from the President of thenation, Dr. Arif Alvi. According to the PTI committee’s statement, it hasbeen agreed upon unanimously for the immediate determination of theelection date by the President of the nation, while they maintain theconstitutional authority and sovereignty of the people’s electedrepresentatives to implement it.
According to PTI, Pakistan is going through one of its most delicateperiods in its history, facing highly complex issues and crises atconstitutional, political, democratic, administrative, economic, and sociallevels. According to the committee, in April 2022, the non-democratic andunconstitutional actions of the regime change conspiracy gave rise tocorruption and chaos in the state structure and governance, causingnational security, national unity, national development, fundamental rightsof the people, and their lives to be affected beyond imagination.
According to PTI, this excitement and anxiety are intensifying with eachpassing day; the assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were analyzedfor January 14 and 18, 2023, respectively. The PTI government has refrainedfrom holding elections within 90 days as per Article 224 of theConstitution. According to the committee, as per Article 48 of theConstitution, in case of premature dissolution of the National Assembly, the President of the nation is bound to announce a date for electionswithin 90 days.
According to PTI, ‘Therefore, if the President of the nation does notfulfill his constitutional obligation and fails to announce the date forgeneral elections while ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution, it is akey demand of the higher constitutional office of the President to protectthe constitutional and democratic rights of the people.’ According to thecommittee, if the President of the nation does not announce the date ofelections, they will be responsible for violating the Constitution andundermining the fundamental constitutional and democratic rights of thepeople.”
