Electricity prices to increase further

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has officiallyannounced a fuel cost adjustment (FCA) increase of Rs. 1.46 per unit forelectricity, specifically for ex-Wapda distribution companies (DISCOs).This adjustment is set to impact all consumer categories, with theexception of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) and Lifelineconsumers.

To ensure transparency and clarity, this adjustment will be itemizedseparately on consumers’ bills, based on the units they were billed for inthe month of July 2023. For ex-Wapda distribution companies (XWDISCOs), thefuel charges adjustment relating to July 2023 will be reflected in theirbilling statements for September 2023.

It’s worth noting that the distribution companies had originally requestedNEPRA to approve a higher increase of Rs. 2.07 per unit under the FCAmechanism. This tariff hike is anticipated to add to the financial burdenfaced by the already struggling population grappling with inflation. Recentweeks have witnessed widespread protests across the country due to inflatedpower bills, and despite assurances of relief, consumers will now confronthigher bills in September.
