A senior player of the Pakistan team, who wished to remain anonymous, recently spoke to Cricbuzz and expressed a concerning belief regarding thePakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) intentions during the ongoing ICC CricketWorld Cup 2023. According to this player, the PCB is deliberatelyengineering the team’s failure in the tournament.
The player’s assertion is that the PCB’s ultimate motive behind thisapparent desire for failure is to implement significant changes in theteam’s leadership and composition. By doing so, the board aims to gaincontrol over crucial decisions regarding the team.
The senior player explicitly stated, “The board wants the team to fail, they don’t want us to win the World Cup just so that they can make thechanges and take control of who leads the team and who gets into the team.”
Furthermore, the player highlighted that internal disagreements andconflicts within the team are not uncommon and can be resolved internallyby the experienced and mature players. They believe that externalinterference is unnecessary.
Despite the importance of the tournament and the collective responsibilityof the team to perform well, the player expressed distress over leakeddiscussions from the dressing room. These leaks are fueled by individualswithin the board who have personal interests at stake. The playeracknowledged that external criticisms, especially from social media andformer cricketers, have had a detrimental impact on the team’s morale.
The player also pointed out the challenging environment the team faces, including extended hotel stays, negative crowd reactions, and criticismsfrom fans and ex-cricketers.
Despite the team’s dedication to training and their strong desire to winthe World Cup, the player voiced frustration with the lack of support fromthe PCB. They accused the board of exacerbating the team’s troubles ratherthan offering assistance.
Additionally, the senior player criticized a recent press release issued bythe PCB, deeming it unnecessary. They accused the board of engaging inpolitical maneuvering instead of focusing on the team’s performance in theWorld Cup. This situation raises serious concerns about the state ofaffairs within Pakistani cricket and its governing body.
