In Islamabad, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa took action onFriday by establishing two separate benches to address specific legalmatters concerning the delay in general elections and the trial ofcivilians in military courts.
The first bench, comprising three members and led by Chief Justice QaziFaez Isa, includes Justices Athar Minallah and Amin ud Din Khan. This benchhas been assigned the responsibility of addressing pleas related to thedelay in general elections and is scheduled to convene on October 23.
Simultaneously, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa assembled a six-member bench todeliberate on the pleas challenging the trial of civilians in militarycourts. The members of this bench include Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi,Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Aijazul Ahsan, Justice Yahya Afridi, andJustice Ayesha Malik. This bench is slated to consider issues related tomilitary trials on the same date, October 23.
It’s worth noting that the previous instance where a six-judge SupremeCourt bench reviewed challenges to civilian trials in military courtsoccurred on August 3. During that session, a request for the formation of afull court bench to address these concerns was denied by the Supreme Court.The then CJP Bandial explained that the bench had discussed this request,but due to summer vacations, the formation of a full court was notavailable until September.
Additionally, Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan hadsubmitted a list containing the names of 102 suspects held in militarycustody to the court.
This list highlighted various individuals involved in incidents such asbreaking into the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, attacking an armyinstitute, assaulting the Lahore corps commander’s residence, attackingarmy garrisons in Multan and Gujranwala, and targeting an ISI office inFaisalabad, among other offenses.
