In Lahore, a challenge has been filed against the amendment to Section 232of the Election Act, which extends the disqualification period to 5 yearsin the Lahore High Court.
According to the details, a request has been submitted against theextension of the disqualification period to 5 years under the ElectionAct’s amended Section 232.
This request was filed in Lahore High Court by Advocate Nadeem Sarwar, inwhich the position was taken that under Article 62(1)(f), thedisqualification period of 5 years has been set, and the Supreme Court hasalready explained this in the Basth case.
This challenge is against the Supreme Court’s decisions on the amendmentand claims that the courts should declare the amendment extending thedisqualification to 5 years as void. It’s worth noting that the NationalAssembly had previously passed a bill to extend the maximumdisqualification period to 5 years by consensus.
The approval of this bill had paved the way for former Prime Minister NawazSharif and the head of the Istehkam e Pakistan party, Jahangir Tareen, tocontest elections.
