During the Pakistan-Netherlands World Cup match, an unusual sportingincident occurred when an over ended with only five deliveries bowled dueto a miscount by umpires Adrian Holdstock and Chris Brown.
In the 14th over, Saud Shakeel scored a boundary on the fifth delivery, butthe umpires mistakenly believed that all six deliveries had been bowled.Since the third umpire, Rod Tucker, did not intervene, the five-ball overwas upheld in accordance with the International Cricket Council (ICC)rules.
This rule, as stated in the “Men’s One Day International PlayingConditions” rule 17.5.1, dictates that if the umpire miscounts the numberof valid balls, the over count as determined by the umpire stands.
A similar error occurred eight overs later when Shakeel hit a delivery fromRoelof van der Merwe for a boundary. Shakeel and Rizwan promptly alertedthe umpires to the fact that the Netherlands had one extra fielderpositioned outside the fielding circle.
